In his long career as analyst, investor-entrepreneur and industry executive Seymour Schulich has never owned 100 million shares of any company.

But given the 90 million share stake he has built up in Pengrowth Energy Corp. — a filing was made Tuesday for an additional five million share purchase — and given that he’s in his 77th year, it would seem the conditions for hitting such a milestone have probably never been better.

Schulich, who owns 16.7 per cent of Pengrowth, wasn’t saying anything about his plans on Tuesday. There’s one advantage of owning 100 million shares: the mathematics on a mark-to-market basis is easy.
