Proposed bill would give Ottawa the power to order vehicle recalls

Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced the proposed legislation Wednesday, saying it will help keep unsafe vehicles off the road.

The Liberal government has tabled legislation that would allow it to order automakers to issue recalls and force them to repair vehicles at no cost to the owner.

The legislation, dubbed the Strengthening Motor Vehicle Safety for Canadians Act, is similar to a Conservative bill that died on the order paper when the 2015 election was called.
